A Little Way to Start the Day: Our Catholic Morning Basket

One of my favorite parts of homeschooling is how we begin our mornings—gathered together, unhurried, and centered on what matters most. In our home, the Morning Basket has become more than just a rhythm; it’s a sacred anchor that sets the tone for the day.

As a Catholic homeschooling mom inspired by the Charlotte Mason method, I see this gentle start not only as a practical tool but also as a deeply spiritual one. It's where faith, beauty, and truth come together. It’s where we cultivate hearts open to wonder—and ultimately, to God.

What Is a Morning Basket?

If you’re new to this idea, a Morning Basket is a collection of books, prayers, songs, and activities we use to begin the day together as a family. It’s not just for the younger children—it’s for everyone. It’s where we pause before diving into individual lessons to learn and worship as one little domestic church.

Why We Use a Morning Basket

The world often tells us to start fast, jump in, and get ahead. But homeschooling gives us the freedom to choose a better rhythm. Our Morning Basket helps us:

  • Center our day on Christ

  • Share truth, goodness, and beauty across ages

  • Build habits of attention, gratitude, and reflection

  • Create shared family memories and traditions

It’s also incredibly flexible. Some days it's 2 or 15 minutes, other days it flows into a full hour. It’s not about checking boxes—it’s about entering into relationship.

What’s Inside Our Catholic Morning Basket

Here’s a peek at what we currently include for a monthly Morning Basket:

📖 Prayer & Scripture

We always begin with prayer. Sometimes we pray a decade of the Rosary (-mostly me, since my kids are really young), sometimes a simple morning offering or litany. We read the daily Gospel or a Bible story—keeping it accessible for little ears, but rich for everyone.

Faith Formation

This might be a saint story, catechism question, or a short lesson from a book. I often include feast day readings or artwork related to the liturgical calendar. While I read, I hand the kids a coloring page of the saint of the day.

🎶 Sacred Music

We sing hymns or worship songs—like This Little Light of Mine, Jesus Loves Me, or Amazing Grace. I’ll also rotate in seasonal songs for Advent, Lent, and Easter. For families with older kids, listening to church hymns that can uplift the soul is recommended (For example: All Are Welcome, Alleluia, Here I am Lord, etc).

📚 Read-Alouds

We choose living books that align with Charlotte Mason’s principles—rich language, noble ideas, and stories that stir the imagination. Sometimes it’s a picture book about nature or a classic fairy tale. Other times it’s poetry or a story from a missionary’s life.

🎨 Beauty & Wonder

I try to include something beautiful every week: a piece of sacred art to observe, a short poem, or nature finds to admire. These tiny moments help form the soul just as much as academics do.

Making It Work for Your Family

Don’t worry if your basket doesn’t look like someone else’s. And definitely don't think you need to do everything I include in mine (I don't always do everything!). There’s no “perfect” formula. Start with what you have. Add what brings joy. And remember—this is not another homeschool task. It’s a way to rest in God together before the busy day unfolds.

You might use a literal basket. Or a shelf. Or just a mental list. You might meet around the kitchen table or cuddle up on the couch. What matters is the heart behind it.

A Little Way to Start the Day

At The Little Way Academy, I want to help Catholic moms find peace and purpose in their homeschool journey. The Morning Basket is one of the “little ways” that’s brought great fruit in our home. I hope it can bless yours too.

Whether you’re just beginning or looking to renew your routine, I’d love to hear how you’re using your mornings. Let’s keep raising little saints—one little way at a time.
